About Us
The Scottish Society of Wilmington is a certified 501(c)3 nonprofit cultural organization dedicated to celebrating Scottish heritage, history, and traditions in southeastern North Carolina and the greater Cape Fear region.
Founded in 1993 to foster fellowship and education, the Society serves as a welcoming home for those of Scottish descent and for all who share an interest in Scotland’s culture and its enduring influence on our local history. We believe heritage is best preserved not only through remembrance, but through active participation, learning, and community engagement.
What We Do
Celebrate Scottish Culture
We promote Scotland’s living traditions through music, dance, storytelling, poetry, and social gatherings that reflect both historic practices and modern expressions of Scottish culture.
Preserve Local Scottish History
The Lower Cape Fear region was a significant center of Scottish settlement in colonial America. The Society supports research, interpretation, and commemorative projects that highlight the role of Scottish immigrants in shaping North Carolina and America’s history.
Educate and Inspire
Through lectures, demonstrations, school and community outreach, and partnerships with historians, artists, and cultural organizations, we seek to deepen public understanding of Scotland and the Scottish-American experience.
Build Community
At the heart of the Society is fellowship. Our events bring people together across generations and backgrounds, creating meaningful connections rooted in shared curiosity, respect, and enjoyment of Scottish traditions.
Support Cultural Initiatives
We collaborate with local, regional, and national partners to sponsor events, host visiting speakers and artists, and advance initiatives that preserve and promote Scottish heritage.
Who We Welcome
Membership and participation in the Scottish Society of Wilmington are open to everyone—whether your connection to Scotland is genealogical, historical, cultural, or simply personal. No prior knowledge is required; only an interest in learning, celebrating, and engaging.
