For the first time in many years, the Scottish Society of Wilmington is hosting a true cèilidh — and we couldn't be more excited to share it with the Wilmington community!
A cèilidh (KAY-lee) is a traditional Scottish (or Irish) social gathering built around live music and participatory dancing. The word itself comes from the Gaelic for "visit" or "gathering," and for centuries cèilidhs have brought communities together in homes, halls, and pubs across Scotland for an evening of music, dancing, and craic (good company and conversation). Unlike more formal, choreographed dance events, cèilidh dancing is meant to be accessible and fun — dances are typically walked through and called out as they happen, so no experience or partner is required.
